The
story is told of a golfer who asked his friend, "Why
are you so late?" The friend replied, "It's Sunday.
I had to toss a coin between going to church or playing golf...and
it took 25 tosses to get it right!"
The Christian life and our relationship to the church is not
a spectator sport, but requires full participation and involvement.
An author once noted to have a land flowing with milk and
honey someone will have to milk the cows and tend the hives.
Visions must have legs. Churches need the commitment and dedication
of their members.
A longtime church member suddenly stopped coming to worship.
The Pastor made a home visit and found the member sitting
quietly in front of his fireplace in a rocking chair. The
member greeted the Pastor and then returned to his silence
staring at the fire. The Pastor sat with him for quite some
time with nothing being said.
Then the Pastor got up, took the tongs, and picking up a glowing
ember placed it on the hearth n front of them both. The Pastor
sat down and continued with the silence as the ember glowed...but
slowly lost its brilliance and heat. When the ember was just
about out the Pastor took the tongs and returned the ember
to the fire where it once again glowed brilliantly.
As the Pastor got ready to leave the member walked him to
the door and replied.."Thanks for the sermon. I'll see
you in church Sunday."

The Spiritual
Life Committee is responsible with the Pastoral Staff and
Consistory for maintaining the strong spiritual life of Jordan.
The committee is composed of the pastoral staff together with
Lay members. Each member of the committee has demonstrated
a mature, close personal relationship with Jesus Christ during
many years in active service for the Kingdom of God.
The Spiritual Life Committee members are
responsible for serving the congregation by nurturing the
spiritual growth of its members. The Spiritual Life Committee
seeks to create a church environment that first, contributes
to and enhances the life of the congregation as a faith community.
The Committee also seeks to encourage and support the individual
spirituality and spiritual growth of church members through
music, traditional and alternative worship experiences and
lay participation. The Spiritual Life Committee works to support
the work and leadership of the Music, Worship, and Church
Growth and New Member subcommittees.
The committee is responsible for Special Worship services,
Bible studies and retreats. The Uppers Room daily devotional,
Bible related literature shared by Pastor Smith for home and
hospital visits and individuals with specific needs are provide
by the committee. The Spiritual Life Committee welcomes all
members to participate in its work. They meet on the fourth
Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the library. It is
our desire to glorify and praise God and enrich our lives
in our service and dedication to Him.

Koinonia
is for youth in grades 7 to 12. We attempt to meet every other
week, however, when you look at the schedule, you can see
that varies with the season of the year. We attempt to plan
a program that offers opportunities to have fun as we learn
and grow as Christian people.
If you have any questions about our schedule or if you
need a ride, please contact our church office.
With so much emphasis on raising funds for your church and
other organizations, we have only 2 fund-raisers during
the year, pizza sales and these are to keep the cost of
the retreats at $40.00. The other activities involving money
are to assist our church in paying off the renovation.
God has a purpose for each of you and has given you talents
you might not be aware of. Please come and share yourself
with us.

As previously
recorded in the words of a former pastor, “Jordan is
Education.” Sunday classes for ages two through adult
gather to teach, learn, and grow together through the dedicated
efforts of our teaching staff. Weekly Bible lessons, songs,
retreats, Vacation Bible School, and Lay Academies accomplish
this learning process. The weekly Bible truths learned by
those in our growing attendance have been extended into our
community through mission, drug and alcohol awareness workshops,
AIDS outreach programs, visiting our shut-ins, and Christmas
caroling to members of our church family and surrounding community.
Weekly Christian teaching and education has
been an integral part of Jordan’s life since its foundation
250 years ago. Constantly aware of the teachings of Our Lord,
Jordan’s Christian education has grown with many new
programs and activities. Some are traditional and all have
grown and improved with creative, new, and fresh ideas.
Today, the Church School uses a unified teaching
curriculum that provides learning that builds upon the prior
year’s teachings. This educational and fun experience
prepares our youth for the right of Confirmation, a one-year
program for our 8th Grade students taught by our Pastor and
Teacher - Reverend Smith.

One of the
newest committees at Jordan is the “Families of Faith”.
Recognizing the growing needs of Jordan while continuing its
long-standing tradition of strong families, is key to our
successful mission. Sharing the ideas that were spawned as
a result of involvement in Family Life Ministries Weekend
to Remember Weekends, and inspired by the energy that has
filled the church this year with a renewed presence of the
Holy Spirit, an idea emerged.
The Vision Statement of Families of Faith aims to provide
an environment that will weave the Church Family of Jordan
into the fabric of all aspects of our members’ lives.
We will strive to promote Jordan’s growth and spreading
roots as a member of God’s Family and help to continue
Jordan’s growth for the future.
The new committee has the following objectives.
-
Strengthen the families of Jordan
-
Provide faith-based education and activity.
-
Expand Jordan’s resources of
human and operational capital.
-
Attract new members.
-
Further member involvement.
-
Cultivate our next generation leaders.
-
Better utilize the talents of our
present members.
Our initiatives include Home Builders Training, Adopt a Family nucleus program,
Bring a Family to Church & Welcome to the Neighborhood,
promotion of Family Life ministries’ conferences,
and the Giving Family.
We will strive to work cooperatively with
various committees including Evangelism, Missions, Stewardship,
Church School, Koinonia and Fundraising.

Through Evangelism,
we offer you an invitation to personal faith, to its community
of faith, and to be a disciple to the world.
The Evangelism Committee of Jordan Church
works to:
- Identify newcomers and welcome them into the church.
- Extend the hand of welcome by visiting, sending a welcome
letter, or a friendly phone call to demonstrate our personal
interest and compassion.
- Assist in orienting new members.
- Incorporate new members into the life of the church.
Some of the initiatives are:
- Providing a time and talents survey to best utilize
the interests and skills of our members.
- Foster fellowship through coordinating the coffee hour
after our Sunday services.
- Welcome members and visitors alike with greeters.
- Implement a “buddy system” pairing new
members with families of like interests and family situations.
- To better acquaint us with each other, we present a
photo gallery. We will display a family pictorial in the
Narthex, accompanied by a short family history and brief
explanation of each photo for three weeks.
The Evangelism Committee meets on the 3rd
Monday of every month at 7pm in the library, usually for one
hour. We encourage your participation and welcome your ideas.

Stewardship
is a biblically-based concept calling us as disciples to use
a portion of what we have -- time, talent and treasure --
in such a way that honors God as Creator and contributes in
a conscious manner to the building of his His kingdom. A personal
commitment of our time, talent and treasure made with faith
love and trust, will enable us to return a response of love
for the greater good of others and for God's glory.
Practicing stewardship in our lives, as well
as implementing it throughout our parish, will allow each
one of us to more fully participate in the life of Jordan.
The Stewardship Committee has been working to make certain
that this "journey of faith" is clearly articulated,
easily understood and that it offers everyone the opportunity
to share in their faith.
What we are and what we have is our gift from a loving God.
A community that understands that life is a gift . . . that
human relationships are gifts, is a gracious community. And
what we get most from that community is a sense of belonging,
something that can only occur when we give and receive our
time and talent.

The Mission
Committee coordinates the missions and services of the Church
beyond the scope of the local church membership community
and works to ensure that Christian missions and social concerns
both in the United States and throughout the world will be
a major priority of the church. This is evidenced by financial
contributions, attendance at ongoing educational opportunities
and personal commitment of time and effort.
